The main difference is the upright post configuration. A Main Rack is the starting unit with 2 uprights, whereas an Add-on Rack connects to the main unit and utilizes only 1 upright. For instance, a continuous wall run of 15 racks consists of 1 Main Rack and 14 Add-on Racks.
